Stifling Stiltgrass

Right now — late August and early September — is the time to pull up all the stiltgrass on your property.

What’s stiltgrass? It’s a non-native invasive grass characterized by a shiny midrib on it’s pointed, dark-green leaves. A native grass has similar leaves but without the shiny midrib.

Volunteers donated 26 hours of work on Aug. 31 to remove around 200 linear feet of stiltgrass from the eastern edge of Brandymore Castle as part of a pilot project to study stiltgrass growth and eradication efforts over a few years. Fort Bennett and Upton Hill Regional Park also are joining in this citizen science program designed by Donaldson Run Park Steward Kit Britton and sponsored by Arlington Regional Master Naturalists.

Learn how to identify stiltgrass and the ways that work to eradicate it from this webinar by Blue Ridge PRISM:
